Lycée européen Charles de Gaulle is a secondary school depending on the national Ministry of Education. It was founded in September 1990 in Dijon (230,000 inhabitants in the city and surrounding area) and has approximately 1000 students from 15 to 18 years old. It is located in a rapidly expanding residential and service industry neighbourhood, which has been built up over the fifteen past years.
It is, above all, a local school, offering a comprehensive program of studies in literature ("section L"), in economics ("section ES") and in science ("section S") ; but its distinctive feature is its orientation towards the teaching of modern languages and foreign civilizations. In 1992, it was one of the first schools in France to open "sections européennes" : 20 to 25 % of its students (many of them boarders) are taught chosen subjects (History and Geography, Physics and Chemistry) partly in a foreign language (English or German). Applicants to these sections are selected according to their school evaluations and their qualifications in modern languages ; they participate in exchanges and in foreign civilization activities which lead to the "mention européenne" or to the "Abibac" (a franco-German degree). Polish students are also welcomed to our school : applicants have to take a competitive exam in Poland in order to be admitted for a three years program. We also host Australian, American, British, German and Spanish students for short periods throughout the year, and we have English, German, Spanish and Russian-speaking foreign assistants.

Our school is well-equipped in high-tech facilities : we have several classrooms equipped with computers, interactive whiteboards, video-conference fittings, a rich Centre de Documentation et d'Information with many computers and extensive (paper and digital) sources in foreign languages. Teaching methods are extremely diverse : with roughly 100 staff, teaching appraoches are multiple. Our school, however, is characterized by a concern for intra- and interdisciplinary co-ordination, support and enrichment. Students are autonomous and have an acute sense of community. There are many extracurricular activities for boarders and day students such as the school magazine, the students' union, a health club, interscholastic sports...
Thanks to the commitment of the teaching staff to maintaining high standards and preserving the friendly atmosphere that has characterized our school since it opened, the Lycée remains very attractive to students and their families.
